Livin' It; Brian Melo

Livin’ It is the debut album of Brain Melo. He’s the winner of the fifth season of Canadian Idol. I always loved his performances during his time on Idol, he was the best one in that particular year no doubt. So it was natural that I expected huge expectation from his album. And it is no surprise that he signed, sealed and delivered it to the spot.

Firstly let me say that, I’m a huge fan of whoever designed the cover of his album. I really love yellow patterned background. The album starts of with the track Shine On which also happens to be the first single of the album. It received a fair amount of airplay on the radio but sadly it didn’t get a video. Melo gives his vocals are real exercise around the chorus when the music gets loud. This is a great starter for the album. For one thing I’m glad he didn’t start off the album with some love ballad.

Back To Me is the second track off the album. This is my second most favorite track off the album. The wordings of the song are hard hitting. Melo sticks to his rock roots firmly here as it was noted in the finale when he performed Bon Jovis’ This Ain’t A Love Song. Another thing I like a lot about this song in particular is the style is somewhat also leaning a bit towards the soulful side of Melo. Good going.

The winning single All I Ever Wanted is the third track from the album. I remember hearing this for the first time in the finale and falling in love with it on the spot. This is my favorite winner single so far from all the winners of Canadian Idol. The lyrics are very fitting to the idea behind the song. The arrangement of the melody is slightly different from the one that was sung in the finale, it’s far better. But I guess this docks off some point on Melo as many criticized his ability to perform LIVE! Personally the accusation seemed absurd to me since he’s been performing in front of million of people for twelve weeks and at many times received standing ovation from the judges and crowd. This is a must listen, people. A must listen!

Summertime is a slow tempo ballad where Melo tells about the sad tale of loosing a loved one. I would have rather had Melo do this song on a faster beat that is noticed more prominently around the part where the chorus starts. It’s good but not great. Melo has better tracks on the album.

The sixth track I Gave You All My Life is another memorable track from the album. Melo does a wonderful job on this track and gives a moving performance. It’s no surprise to me that Melo is probably the best of all the winners so far we have gotten from Canadian Idol. This track got some serious competition from the very next track Obvious as the most moving track from the album. Obvious is the seventh track off the album. It’s the second track which got me hooked on instantly. I still can’t place quite exactly why I kept doing that but I love this song a lot. Melo delivers a powerful delivery around the part of the chorus. I’m surprised they haven’t released this song as a single. These two power ballads are the perfect sound for Melo.

Livin’ It is the first up tempo song from the album. It’s odd Melo decided to title the album off this song but it’s a good choice. One thing about Melo that I had centered on from the first time I heard him was how much he sounds like Chris Daughtry from the fifth season of American Idol(Ironic, isn’t it?) and this song proved my point to the last few who weren’t convinced of it. The song goes on about Melo telling what a good move it was on his part not to listen to the discouraging word of others.

The eighth track off the album Stay caught me completely off guard. For one thing the way it starts with a lot of rapid distorted music seems much like a metal song to me. Even then this track is one of my more favorite tracks off the album. I absolutely love the wording off this song more than any other song off the album and in the upcoming album I’m seriously hoping Melo goes in this direction more and completely diverts from his pop side. This style seems to suit him a lot.

Century is the ninth track off the album. Personally it’s the weakest track from the album. I felt absolutely nothing at all. Infact I fell asleep listening to it. This one does no magic for me I would have loved another track like All I Ever Wanted or Stay.

Half As Good As You is the most moving track off the album. The lyrics are really beautiful. Melo tells us how he would like more to be like his father. My father and I share a passion for music; he is not very much into the current artist except for a few. I told him to give this one a listen on Father’s Day last year and he loved it a lot. It’s one of the slowest track off the album but I absolutely love it.

She Moves Me is the most puzzling track off the album. I still haven’t quite gotten what it’s about. It’s decent but nothing about it made me listen to it again and again. I didn’t quite find home in this song. Hence the reaction to it is pretty much as I had upon hearing Century.

Emily is the pretty good closing track to the journey Melo takes us on. Melo once again embraces his softer side in this song. The guitar notes are really simple and go well along with the easy going flow of the song.

Melo has done a pretty good job on his part. Song BMG hasn’t taken much credit off the album and therefore didn’t bother charting singles from the album. His second album is coming up soon and I’m hoping it’s even better than this one.

My American Idol Pick 4/4

Anoop Desai, or should I say 'Noop Dawg is the 21 year old college student from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

For one thing I'm glad that being an Asian, he isn't being treated as some sort of joke like the Season 6 finalist Sanjaya Malakar.

I remember his audition distinctively as he had showed up in a checkered shirt and shorts of which Simon made fun thinking he's another one of the freak auditions. But when he sang...man, he's got some serious soul in his voice.

I was thoroughly disappointed when he didn't make it on his group night. But was over-joyed when he qualified as the last Wild Card Entry and then was made the very lucky thirteenth finalist(So far on all previous season there have been only twelve finalist.)

His first week didn't go exactly as planned but I still loved his performance. The next two week he was beyond amazing. His version of Always On My Mind and Ooo Baby Baby simply blew me away! A must listen people, a MUST LISTEN!

And all I have to say is; Roo Roo Go Anoop!

My American Idol Pick 3/4

Kris Allen is the 23 year old college student from Conway, Arkansas. He didn't have any camera time at all till Hollywood Week, he was in the group White Chocolate along with fellow Top 36 finalist Matt Giraud.

I really like his song choice. So far he's got the best pick of songs so far. Every single week he's been spot on.His style is more suited to ballads but he's proven himself to be pretty good at the up tempo ones as well. Good for him!

His Grand Ole Opry Week's rendition of
To Make You Feel My Love was one of the best performances I have seen so far on Idol. He needs to work somewhat on stage presence as sometimes he appears shaky.

Anyhow, he's great and I'm a Krisoholic!!

My American Idol Pick 2/4

Lil Rounds is my second favorite in the running competition. She's a 23 year old married mother of three. And she's a really classy singer.

Its no surprise that I'm finding myself on her band-wagon. Every season I'm rooting for the black girl who can sing R&B and Soul with amazing ease. And she's one of the best to come along after a good time. Last season we had a R&B Diva but at times she missed.

But Lil, she never misses! I'm predicting she'll go far but she won't be a winner. American Idol already has a R&B winner so the chances of their being another one are really slim.

Still what the heck! I'm rooting for Lil Rounds!

My American Idol Pick 1/4

Allison Iraheta is an amazingly talented 16 year old from Los Angeles, California. I first saw her during the selection episode for Top 36 where she was singing one of Kelly Clarkson's amazing song Because Of You.

She performed Alone by Heart during her group night and so far she beat every single girl who performed it on Idol before. She has a slight raspiness to her voice, but that helps her rock-type comfort zone.

She's the one I want to win the MOSTEST!

Pages

Verse 1
If I ever sat down to think about you
I bet, I could write a book about you

But, what's the use? What's the point?
The tears I cry shall wash them away

I thought I had you figured out
I thought I knew you, without a doubt

I had no clue of the mysteries you'd hidden
Inside of you
Away from me

Chorus

I thought I'd read you through

Read everything inside, out
Now I know that

The cover was all I read

All the pages inside I'd read before

Pages that told me so much about you
I did not know

That those pages were torn

I could have sworn
I knew you
I was so sure that I knew you

Verse 2

So many things you've held back
Things that don't matter to most

You kept them oh so close
Words that I said and moved on
Those were the words you held on to

I guess that the things went dark
Now, that, I see you're gone
I should have seen that you were alone

Now, these things remain unknown

Bridge

I could have filled out the pages myself
But, they would all be meaningless
These things, you hid are hard to suppress
And, if you confessed, I wouldn't love you any less

Chorus
I thought I'd read you through
Read everything inside, out
Now I know that
The cover was all I read

You wrote your story in blood
All the things you held back, you let it flood

I was a fool, I took you for granted
Now, that you're gone

I don't care of the unknown

I could have sworn I knew you

I was so sure that I knew you

Carnival Ride; Carrie Underwood

After the immense success of Carrie Underwood’s debut album Some Hearts, her sophomore album Carnival Ride was destined to be a huge success. Carrie Underwood stuck to her country roots even more so in this album and that proved to be a bold move on her part. The album sold 527,000 copies in its first week and highlighted Underwood as one of the most promising artists in the future.

The record compromised of thirteen tracks, of which two are cover songs. The song-writing talent behind her second album was more or less the same as the one behind her first album. Hillary Lindsay did a pretty good job with her pieces making sure that they have the touch of Country to the last word. Other writers include Gordie Sampson, Kelly Lovelace, Brett James all of whom have been identified as major country song writers contributed to the album.

The first track off the album is Flat On The Floor was originally on the Country singer Katrina Elam’s sophomore album. The song is fast and super catchy, starting off with a guitar solo and then slowly building up with drum beats. The track’s essence is captured well by Underwood’s vocal. There is a slightly resemblance to the Country legend Patty Loveless but nevertheless this track is the perfect start to the album.

The second track off the album is the extremely pop number All American Girl. This is the second single off the album. The song partly reflects Underwood’s own personal experience which is pretty much believable since she had been tagged as one ever since her first appearance on American Idol.

So Small is complete and perfect country track. It happens to be my personal favorite track of the whole album and also the first single off the album. This track deals with the fact that how much time and energy people waste in truly meaningless things, their quest often leads us to being frustrated and bothered. It talks about faith. This song is a marvel on its own, the whole album is amazing but this song has a league of it’s own. And it’s my sincere request to people reading this review to listen to it from the heart. It seriously does work magic!

Just A Dream is the fourth single of this album. Once again Underwood sticks fast to her country style and displays the heart striking emotions in her voice. She made the song her signature piece. It tells the story of a young woman who lost her love in battle. The song written by Hillary Lindsay described this song as one that many people across the world could relate too. And no doubt this was a major reason that it jumped from #98 to #29 at the Billboard Charts in just a week. Underwood’s fan had been waiting for a very long time for this song to sprout a single and when it did there was an immense sigh of relief. And the video is a must-see, Underwood looks her best here.

Get Out Of This Town is the fifth track and highly reminiscent of the track I Ain’t In Checotah Anymore from her first album. It’s catchy! It’s good but not great! It makes you tap your feet but not the best! Underwood has loads better track to display than this one.

The sixth track Crazy Dreams gave me the biggest smile when I first heard it. It has got the most clever lyrics possibly I’ve ever heard and nearly everyone can relate to it. Well anybody who has crazy dreams can! I was hoping that this track could go ahead as a single as well but sadly it didn’t. Have no worries, I’ve attached a video of lyrics to go along with song. To all hairbrush singers, dashboard drummers, air guitar players and difference makers, take a break from your frenzied activity and listen to it. Oh yeah and then get back to it!

I Know You Won’t is the seventh track. It’s a slow tempo country ballad where Underwood displays her sadness of the absence of her partner from her life. Around the chorus of this song, Underwood goes loud in just the perfect way. It’s heart breaking but its good stuff. Really good stuff! It slightly reminds me of Dolly Parton’s Grammy winning track Here You Come Again but that’s just my imagination. A track that’s worth listening to no doubt!

Last Name!!! This track puts a big naughty smile on your face. All the reckless drinkers often go through this ordeal when they make a rash decision under the influence of alcohol. And even those who don’t indulge in it, this track gets the naughtiness going. This track goes into a fusion of rock and country. It’s the third single off the album. It seems like the producers were hoping to have another success like Before He Cheats from Underwood’s debut album. Sadly it didn’t. But it rendered Underwood’s third Grammy award as the Best Female Country Vocal Performance and has become a favorite among her fans as it’s often requested during her LIVE! performances. And also guaranteed her the award of Favorite Country Entertainer. Not bad, huh?!

You Won’t Find This is the eighth track is a slow ballad where Underwood tells her lover that he won’t find anyone better than her. Honestly speaking who in his right mind would leave Underwood for another woman deserves a private room in asylum with all expenses paid! Coming back to the track, this track gets three out of five stars. It’s good but it isn’t much different from the I Know You Won’t. And I prefer the former over the later.

The ninth track is another cover version. I remember when I saw the song list for the first time I was surprised to find another song under the title I Told You So after Randy Travis having a billboard success under the same name in 1988. And after lending an ear to it I discovered that it’s the same song. And it’s amazing! She was inducted as the youngest member of the Country Music Honor Club The Grand Ole Opry right after performing this song on March 15th 2008. It’s the second most country song from her album after So Small. The track is very different from the original version but Underwood has made it appealing in a totally different way. It’s no carbon copy of the original, take my word on that!

The More Boys I Meet is a funny track. After two slow ballads it’s the perfect remedy to liven the mood up. This song was pinned as a favorite amongst the fan of Grey’s Anatomy as they cited a common resemblance of Dr. Meredith Grey’s relation with her dog. It takes a slight different track from the rest of the album as being a complete pop song without a single hint of country in it.

The second last track off the album is Twisted. Underwood goes on about how crazy, wrong and messed up her lover is and how he mistreats her. It’s up tempo and once again a bit too much pop to be classified as country. The song slows down in the bridge portion which lets in a bit of breathing room and then picks up again later. It’s a good strategy placement since the last track of the album; Wheel Of The World. This track sums up the concept behind the title of the album really nicely.

Underwood was questioned many times behind the title of her album to which she responded as follow;

You step onto this ride called life, and it’s a crazy thing you don’t know anything about, but you get on it anyway. You do what you can to lean different directions to try and get it to go where you want it to go, but you can’t stop it – it just keeps moving. That’s why Carnival Ride works as my album title, because it describes the wonderful craziness that I’ve been through over the past couple years.”

This track get this concept going smoothly. It’s not my favorite track off the album but it made a statement. Underwood as an artist made it extremely clear and concise. Kudos to her for that!

At the end all I have got to say is "Go Underwood"

Will Be There

Verse 1
When you're surrounded in darkness
And, there isn't even a speck of light in sight
When you're feeling helpless
And, there is no one to listen to your plight

And, while something's gone wrong
That you can't make right
You fall down on your knees
You beg and you cry

Hush!! Little one
I'm here now
I won't let you cry

Chorus
Yes, I got your back
No, I won't let you fall
I'll wipe away all your tears
Yes, I got your back
Yes, I'll get you back on track
Yes, I'll be there for you
I will be there

Verse 2
You burnt every bridge, you undid every stitch
Still, I'm here beside you, I'm gonna stand by you
You don't be scared, you stand tall and brave
The world shall end but I won't give up on you

If you fall, I'll help you stand
I'm your shadow, call me your angel
It's not your tears
But laughter that shall last

So, Hush!! Little one
I'm here now
I won't let you cry

Chorus
Yes, I got your back
No, I won't let you fall
I'll wipe away all your tears
Scare away all your fears
And, if you fall down
I'll lift you from the ground
Yes, I got your back
Yes, I'll get you back on track
Yes, I'll be there for you
I will be there for you
I am your angel
I won't let you cry
When you need me
Just call for me
And, I'll be there for you
I will be there for you

One Heartache To Go

Verse 1
Flying up in the sky
But my heart's left somewhere behind
Broken into a million pieces
But you can't find them all
Even if you try (If you try)
But I know you won't
And why should you
You broke it in the first place, ooh

Chorus

One heartache to go...Chicago
Booking the first plane outta San Francisco
Can't stay here for another moment
All I see is my heart broken
Everywhere I look (Everywhere I look)
So I guess I should
Take my leave; If you please
Oh, one heartache to go
One heartache to go

Verse 2
Wish somehow I could
Turn time back
Erase the memories
Of everything we had
Willing to let go of the good
Along with the bad

Oh, everything we had
Everything we had

Guess I was to to know
Sooner or later
Never knew it could be so cold in summer
But it happened for the best
Because you would've never confessed
And I would still be fooled
Still be fooled

Chorus
One heartache to go...Chicago
Booking the first plane outta San Francisco
Can't stay here for another moment
All I see is my heart broken
Everywhere I look (Everywhere I look)
So I guess I should
Take my leave; If you please
Oh, one heartache to go
One heartache to go

Bridge
Getting over is gonna be hard to do
Loneliness will be hard to get used to,
But I gotta go, I gotta do
I gotta, I gotta
And there's nothing one can do

Chorus
One heartache to go...Chicago
Left you to your game,
Yes, you win and here I go,
Booking the first plane outta San Francisco
Can't stay here for another moment
All I see is my heart broken
Everywhere I look (Everywhere I look)
So I guess I should
Take my leave; If you please
Oh, one heartache to go
One heartache to go

All I Ever Wanted; Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson’s fourth studio album All I Ever Wanted was no doubt one of the most anticipated releases expected during 2009. After the numerous controversies that surrounded the song writing talent behind her third studio album My December, the songs featured in this album were written by the dark times that Clarkson went through her Breakaway Tour. Along with the conflicts, there was also an on going feud with Clarkson’s record label who wanted her to pursue a direction similar to her second album Breakaway.

Clarkson refused to take it that way and eventually settled down with the album she wanted. The record did well in her circle but failed to generate as well as her previous album. Songs like Never Again and Don’t Waste Your Time were good starters but later on it didn’t give as much as the people hoped for knowing how terrific Clarkson really is. Besides the given history, another important factor that had people waiting on their toes for this album was the fact that Kelly has done a couple of tracks in collaboration with One Republic frontman, Ryan Tedder; who has been previously identified by hits like Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis and Love Like This by Natasha Bedingfield.

All I Ever Wanted totally strips down Clarkson to the same brilliance that was noted in Breakaway. I'm not a big fan of the cover art as Clarkson definitely seems photo-cropped and the background is too psychedelic for my taste. But given the pop, fun commerical feel to the album it goes along with it really well.

The album starts off with My Life Would Suck Without You which also happens to be the first single off this record, and this is the perfect starting no doubt. The track gets your blood pumping with its catchy beat and the brilliant songwriting of Dr. Luke and Max Martin who gave her the more refined tracks in Breakaway. The song made billboard history by jumping from #97 to #1 breaking the record previously set by Beautiful Liars from Beyonce and Shakira in 2008(And in no way does this have to do with gyrating hips and seductive dancing). The video made its debut on January 28th. This video clearly depicts why Clarkson sets herself apart from the million of others female singers out there. She doesn’t need to put on an outfit worth millions for a song; she simply uses her vocal ability.

I Do Not Hook Up is the second track from the album is written by newest American Idol Kara DioGuardi and the very famous Katy Perry. This song has the most beautiful starting verses ever. It builds up nicely as it moves towards the chorus and leaves you dancing on the floor. A purely commercial track that will no doubt creep into iPods all over the world along with the rest of the album.

Cry is a slow power ballad that gives you a softer touch of the album. Though Breakaway is still my favorite ballad from her but this one is quite a tough competitor for the title. The heart breaking lyrics touch the chords instantly and her vocals do the remaining magic.

Don’t Let Me Stop You is the fourth track and it’s just the right medicine after a slow track like Cry. It is built along the same lines as Since U Been Gone but out stripes it by a mile. And I have a sneaky feeling this just might be the second single from the album. Every single cheated-on soul is going to feel right at home with this track and they can have a nice time listening to it while throwing darts at their ex’s pin-ups. This is my second most favorite track from the album.

The fifth track is the title track, All I Ever Wanted. Though it starts really silently but the moment Clarkson starts singing you can’t help tapping your feet. It’s typically catchy and irresistibly sing-along song. The chorus blows away her powerhouse vocal and puts up another tack of reasoning as to why Clarkson won the first season and helped the show find more winners like Carrie Underwood and David Cook.

Already Gone happens to be my favorite track from the entire album. The moment I had listened to it for the first time I was hoping that this would be selected as this year’s farewell track. This is seriously uplifting and it’s my request to all of you to take a sneak at it’s lyric. If this doesn’t make you start moving forward then you just haven’t listened to it properly. This track is the shining star of the entire album. A possible factor to it’s brilliance is probably the fact that it’s written and produced by Tedder.

If I Can’t Have You is the second track from the album to which Ryan Tedder has contributed. Frankly speaking this track was somewhat of a disappointment to me. This song utilizes heavily the vocoder effect which almost nearly every other person in the industry happens to be using. Clarkson’s vocal prowess isn’t properly delivered. If it’s meant to be a dance track it’s okay, since you really don’t need to pay attention to the lyrics but just groove to the beat. It’s merely a filler for the next track, Save You. This is the third ballad from the album. The only thing I can say about it that it’s haunting and beautiful. The songwriting process certainly involved a lot of thought that comes out. No doubt a brilliance on Ryan Tedder’s part.

Whyyouwannabringmedown is the ninth track of the album. And guys is this a blood pumper! If you’re a fan of collecting songs that will make you want to bang your head then this track definitely deserves a spot on your playlist. It’s fast! It’s contemporary! It’s now! Just be careful around the time the chorus starts because if you get too much in the vibe you’re going to hurt your neck really bad. Ouch!

Long Shot is a song that seems as it’s written by Katy Perry. Honestly speaking, even before I had found out who had written it I thought “Man, this song should have been sung by Katy!” But have no worries, Clarkson works her magic as well. Impossible is yet another Clarkson and Tedder co-operative work. Lyrics are superb; this is the song which caught my attention from the first second it got to my ear drum. There’s something about this song that clicks in your mind and you can relate to it.

Ready is so not the song I would have expected to find in a Clarkson album. This song is like a Natasha Bedingfield track with repetitive drum beats and a simple rhythm. It’s good but not great. Another power ballad or heart break number could have done a better job.

Ever heard one of those cheesy sixties number from Disney where the background singers really get a good chance at their 15 minutes of fame?! Well this is exactly what I get in my mind from the thirteenth track I Want You. This is a big disappointment!

If No One Will Listen is a beautiful track. It will instantly crawl into your mind and you will find yourself having your heartbeats fused with the tune of this song. It’s just so good!

Now if you have had the chance to own the Deluxe Edition then a track worth lending your ear to is Tip Of My Tongue. Left up to me, I would have swapped it with I Want You any day of the week. But what the heck, it’s fine. Coming back to it, this track in the starting gives you a hip hop feel with the foot stomping and clapping noises but Clarkson insures that it does it not only stay to her zone but roots itself firmly there.

The Day We Fell Apart and Can We Go Back seem like the track that could’ve been on the album but then the album would have had too much heartbreak stuff to it’s theme and gone quite opposite to the title of the album since no sane person under the sun wants a heartbreak every now and then.

All I Ever Wanted is certainly a keeper no matter whether you’ve been a Clarkson fan over the years or not! I’ve already gotten two of my friends to get hooked on her!

Breaking Away

Verse 1
I don't wanna live another day
I'm stuck in the shadow of yesterday
Mistakes I've made, I can not forget
I guess this is what they call regret

There's nothing under the sun
That I can say I haven't done
Nothing to be proud of; everything to be ashamed of

Chorus
Baby, I miss those times when we stayed together
Through tears and smiles
We looked at the sun shining on us
As we walked together on the sand for miles
But now that things have changed
The skies have now turned to grey
Baby, ever since you walked away
And all that's left is breaking away

Verse 2
I never meant to do the things I did
I can not get rid of the words that I said

I can not look into the eyes that loved me so much
I'm sorry, girl

The only place I want to be is in your arms
There's nothing else
No, there's nothing else
That could make it better

Refrain
Baby, this is how I feel
This is how I really feel

Verse 3
Please give me another chance
Let's have this one last dance
Let me hold your hand
And help you understand
Baby, I'm changed man

Chorus
Baby, I miss those times when we stayed together
Through tears and smiles
We looked the sun shining on us
As we walked together on the sand for miles
But now that things have changed
The skies have now turned to grey
Baby, you walked away
And all that's left is breaking away

Mr. Jealous

Verse 1
I should be happy that you finally got someone

I should be oh so glad for you
I should be doing my happy dance right now
But I'm not! What a shock!
And I can't believe this is happening
What am I to do now that suddenly
I'm feeling something for you

Chorus

I wanna throw him underneath a truck

Drown him in a bath tub
Push him off some high cliff
Leave him in his car on a burning bridge
Yeah, I know I'm being Mr. Jealous
I'm so good at being Mr. Jealous

Verse 2
They're always been boys in your life
Then how come I never felt this way
Guess this guy plans to make you his wife
And that's why I can't stand him

And I'd be oh so happy if you ditch him tonight
But I should not get my hopes up

Since you call him Mr. Right

Chorus
I wanna walk him off a plank
Right into a pool of man-eating sharks
I wanna coat him in tar n' feathers
And make him stand out in this cold weather
I'll sell him off to a wealthy Sheikh as a slave boy
Or the British claiming it's a hunting decoy
I know I'm being Mr. Jealous
I'm so good at being Mr. Jealous

Bridge
But if there's one thing that makes me stop and think
Is the way you look at him
And if he makes you that happy

I guess he wins

Chorus
So no more being Mr. Jealous
